Just before the race Kathryn placed a comment on "Protection Island Facebook Page" to make sure the team would raise enough money:

"Dear neighbours, friends and family

Protection Island once again has an entry in the Silly Boat Regatta (July 14th). As you likely know, this is the major fundraising event for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre. Our team is called Soggy Bottoms 4KIDS and the name of our boat is ‘Jerry’s Spirit’ (in honour of Jerry Howell – a much loved and missed former resident). Although we are a very small community, last year the Soggy Bottoms 4KIDS team raised just under $8500 dollars for the CDC and we have been awarded the distinction of having the “most pledges/support from a community group” for the past two years. So far this year, we have raised just over $7000 (Wow!), but we are hoping to surpass last year’s total. Save July 14th on your calendar and please come to Maffeo Sutton Park to cheer our team on to victory. If you’d like to donate…cash, cheques or e-transfers (pm me for email/password) would be welcomed! No donation is too small, as every dollar will make a difference, but $20 and over automatically generates a tax receipt.

Thanks so much for your support! Kathy xoxoxo"

Maybe the energies floating around were not enough so it was decided to "Make Up" the paddlers:

On the famous day, the "Soggy Bottoms 4kids" team won it's first BIG victory!

Nanaimo News Bulletin: "The annual charity event was held today, July 14, at Maffeo Sutton Park, raising more than $100,000 for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre......Raising the most pledges this year were the Protection Island Soggy Bottoms 4 Kids again this year, with $8,700."

The fierce competition started well before the race with strange characters trying to out-do our mermaids!

Even ghosts!

The race started.

In fact there was 8 races of 4 to 5 teams each, the winners would race together at the end for the grand Champion.

Coaches...... Serious talks but who listens???

Already ahead!

Brenda, the person responsable for all this was also the best cheerleader in Nanaimo!

Almost there!

The Winner of Race #5

Where is the Boat? And yes they came last!

But after all this excitement we we ready or the grand finale!

Another good push for a really good start.

Congestion ahead, no speed possible, and the small ones are kept behind!

No more energy I believe.

Oh no they were not sad........................

Back to the starting point. Thanks Soggy Bottoms 4kids team.
